The great thing about Carl Sandburg is his ability to evoke images using very few words. Both Sandburg poems, one from class and a second that is one of my favorites, are simple in their form and articulation, yet I think stir powerful images. The first poem gives you a very cartoonish image of the Halstead Street car, something very close to one of the old 1930 cartoons, while the second poem evokes the image of a passion that I think is very powerful.
Edward J. Steichen comes to mind quite quickly when one thinks of Sandburg, if only for the fact that they were related, by marriage, but they share more than that. Steichen’s photographs are highly simplistic and usually very pure, i.e. lots of nudity. This simplicity links Sandburg and Stiechen.
